Inclusive Climbing: Craig DeMartino of Adaptive Adventures

If you've ever questioned the life-changing potential of outdoor activities, then check out my interview with Craig DeMartino.

As the Climbing Manager of Adaptive Adventures, Craig's journey from quite literally falling down to rising up and empowering others with physical disabilities is truly inspiring.

Adaptive Adventures was founded 25 years ago by two individuals with disabilities who discovered the absence of opportunities for people like them to engage in outdoor activities.

Since its founding, the non-profit organization has expanded to offer a range of outdoor sports, including climbing, biking, and water skiing, all with the mission of empowering individuals to engage in activities that transcend the perceived limitations posed by their disabilities.

Adaptive Adventures now supports communities across 42 states in the United States. Through strategic partnerships with climbing gyms (like Movement Gyms) and Veterans Affairs offices, the organization continues to broaden its reach.

Craig joined Adaptive Adventures 12 years ago as the organization’s first Climbing Manager. A two-time national adaptive climbing champion and the first amputee to climb El Capitan in under a day, Craig’s personal journey with climbing gives us a first-hand account of the challenges and triumphs inherent in adaptive outdoor sports.

One of the most inspiring topics of our conversation was the impact of outdoor activities on mental health. As Craig spoke about the healing potential of climbing, he highlighted the focus required during climbing – encapsulated by the concept of “The Flow State” – to combat anxiety brought on by PTSD and other health diagnoses.

Background of mountains. Foreground with quote: I talk a lot about the three feet in front of you. That's the only place when you're climbing that you can actually affect change.

Craig's commitment to removing barriers goes beyond climbing. He’s partnered with companies such as Evolv and Arc'teryx to increase the accessibility and affordability of climbing equipment.

Check out our full interview for more details on Craig's incredible journey, the profound impact of Adaptive Adventures, and his partnerships shaping the adaptive climbing landscape.
